The #1 Thing That Moves Your Google Maps Ranking

Your Google Business Profile.

Log into your profile right now and fill out every possible piece of information.

Categories, business description, opening date, contact information, socials, service areas, opening hours.

Anything you can fill in, fill it in.

Do this for 10 minutes and you will rank above 75% of local competitors, because most business owners are simply too busy to deal with this.

You'll notice a "Profile Strength" indicator on your dashboard. When it turns green and says "Looks good," your profile is fully optimized. That's your target.

Pro tip: Not sure what to write? Open ChatGPT or any AI tool, tell it your business name, location, and what you do, and ask it to write your business description, services, and categories. It will guide you through the whole thing in minutes.

One more thing people overlook: add photos. Google rewards active profiles.

Add photos of your work, your team, your location, inside and outside. The more visual your profile, the more engagement it gets, and the higher Google ranks you. Aim for at least 10 photos to start, then add new ones regularly.

But filling out your profile is just the start and the easiest lever you can pull. Here's what separates the top 3 from everyone else.

Get More Google Reviews

Reviews are one of the biggest, if not the biggest, ranking factor on Google Maps.

Optimizing your profile gets you past most competitors. But to beat the ones at the top, the businesses with 30, 40, 50 reviews, you need to catch up on reviews too.

You don't need more than them. A fully optimized profile with 15 reviews will beat a poorly optimized profile with 30 reviews 90% of the time. But having 2 reviews while they have 40? That gap is hard to close no matter how good your profile is.

Here’s a real example: this client had only 5 reviews, while competitors had 18, 13, and 30. Better optimization was still enough to outrank them.

Luckily, the review gap wasn’t too big, and the competitors’ profiles were poorly optimized.

After every finished job, ask your client to leave a review. That's it. Don't send them scripts (Google hates that and so do customers). Just ask naturally, and you'll be surprised how many people are happy to help.

Ask in person or via a direct WhatsApp message right after the job is done. That's when satisfaction is highest and they're most likely to follow through.

Your Website Sends Signals to Google Maps Too

Most people don't realize your website directly affects your Google Maps ranking.

Google cross-references your website and your Google Business Profile. If the information doesn't match, it creates confusion and your ranking suffers.

First, make sure your business name, address, and phone number on your website match your GBP exactly.

Second, that big headline in the middle of your homepage is one of the first things Google reads to decide what your website is about. Most businesses waste it by putting their company name, "Joe's Plumbing" or "Smith & Associates."

Don't do that.

Make it your niche and city instead. "Interior Designer in Jacksonville." "Plumber in Austin." "Dentist in Miami." That one change tells Google exactly what you do and where you do it.

Here’s an example from a client website we optimized using this exact approach.

Notice how the main headline clearly includes the service and city. This gives Google a clear signal about what the business does and where it operates.

Same goes for your page title, the text you see in the browser tab. Most people leave it as just their company name. Change it to your niche and city too. "Joe's Plumbing | Plumber in Austin." Two words changed, and Google now has two clear signals telling it exactly what your business does and where.

Citations: Tell Google Your Business is Real

Those boring Yellow Pages sites everyone ignores? Google uses them to verify your business is legitimate.

The more places your business is listed, the more signals Google has that you're a real, established business worth ranking.

Open your laptop right now and get your business listed on as many directories as you can find. Google, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing, Yellow Pages, Foursquare, TripAdvisor. This is a one-time task that takes an hour and will move the needle significantly toward your top 3 goal.

One important rule: your business name, address, and phone number must be identical everywhere. Not similar. Identical. If there's a mismatch between listings, Google sees it as a red flag and your rankings will suffer.

How Far Can You Get With This?

Implement everything in this guide and you will rank higher on Google Maps. Guaranteed.

Most of your competitors haven't done half of this.

Here's a quick recap of what to do today:

  • Fill out your Google Business Profile completely. Every field, every section. Use AI to help if you're stuck.

  • Get more Google reviews. Ask every client after every job. Naturally, no scripts.

  • Optimize your website. Match your NAP everywhere, fix your homepage headline, fix your page title.

  • Get listed on directories. One hour, one-time task. Name, address, phone number identical everywhere.

Do all four and you're already ahead of the majority of local businesses on Google Maps.
